Colocation 2026: host your own server
Colocation means renting space in a data centre for your own physical server. You own the hardware while the provider supplies power, cooling, connectivity and physical security.
When colocation beats renting. If you already have servers or need a specific hardware configuration, colocation is cheaper than long-term dedicated rental and gives full control over the machine. You place your server in a data-centre rack, and the provider handles the surrounding infrastructure — power, cooling, network and security. It's usually measured in units (1U, 2U) or whole racks.
Key selection criteria. Look at the data centre's Tier level (Tier III+ = redundancy), the power-redundancy scheme (N+1 or 2N plus diesel generators), bandwidth and the number of independent uplinks, and the terms and speed of physical access to your rack. For Ukraine since 2022, blackout resilience matters specifically — generator capacity and fuel reserves.
Power, network and SLA. Clarify the dedicated power per rack (kW) — modern GPU servers easily hit the electricity limit rather than the space limit. Check the guaranteed uptime SLA, KVM/IPMI for remote management and remote hands (when a DC engineer physically switches something for you). Unlimited or quota-based traffic is also a matter of agreement.
Who it suits and the alternative. Colocation is chosen by companies with their own equipment and a need for full control: fintech, telecom, projects with custom hardware or server-locked licences. If you don't need your own hardware, renting a dedicated server is simpler and more flexible (no capital costs or logistics). Before signing, visit the DC or request an audit: Tier, generators, uplinks and access terms matter more than the price per unit.
Bottom line: for most projects in Ukraine the ideal VPS means NVMe storage, 99.9%+ uptime, a convenient panel and support in your language. Start with the ranking leaders above and compare them side by side.
