Unlimited in the literal sense doesn't exist. A server has finite disk, CPU and network, so 'unlimited traffic' just means no counter as long as you don't load the machine like a data centre of your own. That's a normal model for shared hosting: the provider assumes a typical site uses little and doesn't count gigabytes — but reserves the right to step in on abnormal load.

Where the limits actually hide. Read the resources section of the TOS: the real limits are almost never in 'space' but in the inode count (files — critical for sites with thousands of small files), CPU/RAM load, the number of concurrent processes (entry processes) and concurrent DB connections. A growing site hits these limits long before it runs out of 'unlimited' space.

When unlimited shared is a fine choice. For a blog, brochure site, landing or small store, an 'unlimited' plan is perfectly fine: you'll never reach the fair-use ceiling and you pay less. The key is recent PHP, NVMe and adequate CPU/inode limits for your CMS. There's no need to overpay for a VPS for such a site.

When it's time for a VPS and how to check. If traffic is steadily high, there are many background jobs or a heavy database, it's more honest to take a VPS with clear but guaranteed resources than to live under the threat of 'exceeding fair use'. Before paying, find the concrete inode, entry-process and CPU numbers in the TOS — not just the word 'unlimited' on the landing page — because those decide whether the plan can carry your project.
