A US VPS shows up regularly in "best of" lists, which is misleading: American infrastructure genuinely is strong and there are plenty of providers. But for a Ukrainian project it's usually the wrong choice — simply because of physics. Let's work out when the US is genuinely needed and when you'd be paying in latency for nothing.
If your visitors are in Ukraine or the EU, take a European server. Latency to the US is 120–160 ms against 20–40 ms to Europe, and the difference is visible to the naked eye. The US is justified only when the audience, partner APIs or exchange physically sit there.
What 120–160 ms means in practice
Latency is the time a packet takes to reach the server and come back. A fifth of a second sounds trivial, but it multiplies. Loading a page isn't one request — it's dozens: HTML, styles, scripts, images, API calls.
On a European server, ten sequential round trips add roughly 300 ms. On an American one, over a second and a half is spent purely on travel, even if the server itself is instant. It hurts most in admin panels and checkout flows, where requests fire one after another.
When the US genuinely makes sense
- A SaaS or service whose core audience is American: then you feel the latency, not your customers
- Integrations with US APIs (payment systems, marketplaces, ad platforms) — proximity cuts processing time
- Algorithmic trading on NYSE or NASDAQ: milliseconds decide, so servers sit as close to the exchange as possible
- Access to services that only work from US IP addresses
- A backup site on another continent, to spread risk
And the reverse: an online store serving Kyiv, a Ukrainian company's corporate site, a Ukrainian-language blog on a US server — that's simply a slower site with no upside whatsoever.
The most common mistake is taking a US server because "the infrastructure is better there". The infrastructure genuinely is good, but it doesn't repeal the physics of distance.

East, West or the centre
The East Coast — New York, Ashburn (Virginia), Miami. This is the closest point to Europe: roughly 110–130 ms from Ukraine. Ashburn is particularly interesting because a huge share of the world's cloud infrastructure sits there, so connectivity is excellent.
The West Coast — Los Angeles, San Jose, Seattle. From Ukraine that's already 150–180 ms, but latency to Asia and to most tech companies' offices is minimal. Worth it if your audience is on the US west coast or in the Asia-Pacific region.
The centre — Dallas, Chicago. A compromise: even latency across the whole of the US, around 130–150 ms from Ukraine. A good pick when customers are spread nationwide.
What it costs
US VPS pricing barely differs from European: 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM around $4–6 a month, 2 vCPU and 4 GB $10–15, heavier configurations from $20. Traffic allowances in the US are usually generous or unmetered.
What genuinely differs is support. Many American providers run a self-service model: basic support answers tickets within a day, and fast response costs extra. For a project without its own administrator, that matters.
Paying from Ukraine — the main obstacle
Many US providers don't accept Ukrainian cards, or route the payment to manual verification: a photo ID, proof of address, sometimes a selfie holding the card. It doesn't always mean rejection, but a first payment can drag on for a day or two.
Workable routes: providers supporting PayPal, paying in crypto (accepted by nearly all major clouds), or an international card. If you need the server urgently, verify the payment method before building your project around a specific supplier.
What to check before paying
The required minimum: virtualisation type (KVM, not OpenVZ), genuine NVMe, port speed and traffic policy, DDoS protection, refund terms. And separately — whether hourly billing is available: most American clouds offer it, which is handy for testing. You can spin a server up for a few hours, measure real latency from your location and destroy it for pennies.
